Introduction

Throughout school year 2015 - 2016 we have participated in the Global Scholars Program, learning many new things about sustainability, the consequences of the fast population growth in the cities, and how it is going to affect the environment... After that, we realized there were some simple things we could do to achieve an improvement in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability.

Our Community Action Project

We researched our school building, and we noticed that there were many things we could do to save energy and materials.

So, we decided to take some steps in order to save more energy and then to improve this way a little bit the environment. In particular we focused on the use of lights. In general terms our goal was to educate our school community and also advocate for changes within our reach.

First of all we did a diagnosis of the use of energy and materials in our school. For example, during a week we checked to what extent students were involved in using energy in a right way.

After that our class delegates explained the results of our research and our ideas for saving energy in the general school assembly.

Then we started hands on the project...

Double gain

Participating in Global Scholars program has been a true experience. Not only we have got to know better how to care for the environment, we have also got to know other cities and countries, and students from all over the world. It has been a great adventure!

Checking how aware we are about light consumption

Among other things, we kept a register of which classrooms had the lights on or off at breaktime (10 / 10:30 a.m.) and at lunch time (12:30 p.m.), for a week.

We noticed that students and teachers not always remembered to turn them off.
